Houston Assisted Living Director on Community Improvements
by Rodney Brooks, Executive Director, Treemont Retirement Community

Treemont is making headway on many items of improvement to the community.

The automated doors have been installed in the lobby area leading to the back patio. If you haven't noticed, the new "auto" doors are located just near the fireplace closest to the dining room side.

The new buffet line equipment is up and running and is a nice addition to the dining room remodel.  We still have a few things we will be adding such as tile wall behind the buffet line and new built in cabinetry for the beverage station.  We will be doing these items with our "in-house" maintenance crew.

Houston Assisted Living Activities: Residents Enjoy Smoothie Workshop with Healthy Benefits

Nutrition is one of the hottest topics in health today, with many doctors and nutritionists treating and even curing chronic diseases through proper nutrition. Of course, much of this information is available on the internet, but residents at Treemont Retirement Community have been treated to in-person monthly seminars this summer, taught by Columbia-educated Nutrition Professor Martica Heaner. Dr. Heaner, who has written eight books and even had her own TV program in the UK, is working with residents to help them understand the role of different nutrients in the body, and teaching them how to plan a well-balanced diet from the options available to them in the community dining room.

“Our residents were especially intrigued by the data and studies

Activities for Seniors Houston Assisted Living: Comfort Birds Harvey Seniors

The Woodcarving Group at Reynoldsburg Senior Citizens Center in Reynoldsburg, Ohio sent a box of beautifully carved, exqusite, wooden birds "Comfort Birds" to convey comfort and support, despite the distance, to our Senior Survivors of Harvey. Guided by Center Director Judy Doran, who reached out to Treemont Activity Director Aimee Dubuisson about receiving "comfort birds" for 11 Harvey victims who moved to Treemont. These senior living Houston residents shown below (with Aimee) were thrilled to be part of this heartfelt initiative.

The comfort birds are made of various kinds of wood and sanded to a smooth finish. In the May 2, 2016 issue of Wood Carving Illustrated, Kathleen Ryan recalls how Frank created the Comfort Birds. Frank Foust started carving comfort birds in 1982.  He and some other carving enthusiast created these pieces of art. He called them Comfort Birds because they are so smooth and soft and they fit

Treemont Residents Help Harvey "New Neighbors" in Assisted Living Houston Community

The "New Neighbors" arriving at Treemont (storm victims) have become arriving at Treemont, many with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The High & Dry Welcoming Committee have helped sort out the many donations provided by the community of "Nextdoor Woodlake." These donations have been plentiful and are everything one person would need to start up housekeeping.

Treemont Assisted Living Houston Residents wanted to do something to help the storm victims and have decided to call these displaced persons "New Neighbors" instead of storm victims or evacuees.

Jesuit Strake Student Volunteers Help Assisted Living Houston Residents

The August Junior Volunteers were here the week of August 8th to 11th. The Junior Volunteers are entering Strake Jesuit Preparatory School as freshmen for the 2017/2018 term and have volunteered to help our residents for this week.

Pictured helping a new resident, Pattie McBride, settle into her new home and putting together organizational things are (Center - R) Drew, Dylan, David and Wyatt. New resident, Pattie McBride, was thrilled to have these handy young men assemble much needed organizational storage units.  There was a shelf to be put above her commode, an under-the-sink metal bin that slides out and another under-the-sink storage unit for the kitchen.   She was so proud and happy to have their assistance.

How Student Volunteers Help Assisted Living Residents
by Lois McCall, Treemont resident

Who would have thought that one of Treemont's best perks would be its student volunteer program?

Faced with a mountain of board meeting minutes and financial records that needed shredding, I signed up for help. I knew that it would be tedious to separate the papers from the covers and dividers and figured it would take at least a full day for me to do that, then put the papers through the shredder.

Yesterday morning three fine, clean-cut young men appeared at my door reporting for duty. They introduced themselves as Arthur, Lee and Peter (Lee and Peter on on right in photo) and said "Mrs. McCall, we are here to help you. What do  you need?"

The Fruits of our Labor, Gardening Angels Club for Assisted Living Houston Residents

"The fruits of our labor" - - - - Beautiful organic tomatoes are being harvested by Treemont residents. Gardening Angels Group meets each week to tend to the gardens, search for and eliminate pests, harvest ripening fruit/peppers. The herbs in the gardens are available all year long and enhance residents soups and salads. Our newest Gardening Angel, Felix Meyer, waters the gardens each evening after the HOT Houston sun begins to set. As a result, the gardens are flourishing and producing bumper crops. Residents continue to enjoy the high planters that Maintenance Don and his team built a year ago!
