Senior Living Houston: Spotlight on Maintenance Director Don Ibanez
Treemont Maintenance Director Don Ibanez has been a consistent, reassuring presence on the Treemont Campus for 34 years. Everyone at Treemont knows Don’s name and talks about him and his oversight of the Maintenance Department with awe and amazement. He is Treemont’s “rock star” on campus.
A key reason seniors move to a retirement community is the following: “No more upkeep of a large home! No more chores or housekeeping! No more maintenance!” Don makes a point to make this desire a reality. He is typically one of the first Department Heads new residents meet when they move into their new apartment, stopping by to make sure all is working well in the apartment, to introduce himself and advise on how to place a work order.
Don is responsible for all aspects of Treemont Retirement Community maintenance. He oversees a team of 6 that includes facility maintenance, internal community upgrades, turning over apartments for new residents, and daily maintenance tasks. Don is revered for his immediate attention to any issue, large or small.
Don takes initiative on special projects, which include setting up the life-size, interactive, Halloween Haunted House in the Treemont Lobby, as well as decorating the outside and the Lobby for Christmas. Says Don, “I love my residents. They remind me of my grandma. There’s lots of love here. I could have gone elsewhere, but I love the environment of Treemont. Time flies when you’re having fun.´
Often time in senior living communities, there can be friendly friction between the leasing staff and the maintenance team, with the marrketing staff pushing to have apartments “made ready” for the next new resident. Don is the cheerleader for filling apartments and works seamlessly to support the marketing team.
Don was also one of the cadre of Treemont staffers who stayed overnight for 5+ days during Hurricane Harvey, tending to the property and its residents. Most recently Don and his team delighted residents during the recent snow storm by building a snow man!! Don is a Native Houstonian who attended Madison High School, the school that Vince Young put on the map leading the University of Texas to an 11-0 season and victory in the Fiesta Bowl.
Married to Frances with two children: Ashley, age 20 and David, age 18, Don met his wife in the Treemont kitchen 21 years ago. At that time, Don took a personal interest in all maintenance requests from the dining room! The rest is history. Don has been here all his adult life, responding to a Treemont classified ad, and got the job. He started changing light bulbs and has been at the maintenance helm for 25+ years.
Don’s spontaneous initiatives, such as building a Snowman in the back courtyard during the recent snow storm, is what endears him to staff, residents and families. Treemont is fortunate to have such a stellar and dedicated person to make our senior living Houston community residents feel at home.
