Many of you have seen a warm, friendly face walking around the Treemont campus. Sheila Quia is Senior Allegiance’s Medicare Quality Assurance (QA) Coordinator. She is also the liaison with Medical Director Dr. Adrian Zaharia, a physician for many Treemont residents, and their families.
Are you aware that Medicare covers the cost of many of the services that allow you to remain active, especially if you have been hospitalized in the past year? Senior Allegiance will work with your doctor to help identify service needs that can be provided under the Medicare program, including physical, occupational or speech therapy as well as nursing care. In her Quality Assurance role, Sheila reviews nurses’ Medicare notes to make sure they comply with doctors’ orders, and verifies that they qualify for Medicare home health and therapy.
Director of Nursing Karina Walker says, “Sheila has been an integral part of the Senior Allegiance team. She has a keen eye for details which comes in handy when reviewing our documentation that is submitted to Medicare for compliance and reimbursement. She plays a crucial role as our liaison with our Medical Director, Dr. Zaharia, as well as our Psychiatrist, Dr. Merkl. Sheila is a team player that is willing to help her co-workers at any time. From processing labs, submitting therapy referrals, setting up Dr. Zaharia’s appointments, to assisting nurses in making sure patients health care needs are met, Sheila is does it all!”
Originally from the Philippines, Sheila Quia moved to the USA at age 19. She followed her parents and sister from New Jersey to Houston in 2003. Sheila’s mother is a Registered Nurse at MD Anderson Medical Center. Her father, a lawyer, passed away in 2007. Sheila is married with two children, ages 8 and 1. Her husband is an Occupational Therapist at Treemont Healthcare Center. In her free time, Sheila loves reading, baking, fishing and decorating her home.
Sheila previously worked as a QA and Alternate Administrator for another home health agency. Sheila says. “I enjoy working with seniors who have worked very hard and taken care of their family. Now it’s their turn to be taken care of.” She joined Senior Allegiance in 2011 largely because, being based at Treemont, it was easier for her to interact with the nurses and review their Medicare notes in a timely way. Sheila added, “I also found the employees easy to work with and liked the care and compassion the employees give to the residents.”
Her favorite story is: “Medicare rules prohibit Home Health employees from accepting payments from patients. When I volunteered to check on a wife of a senior resident, the husband took out his wallet to give me money. I refused. He kept insisting I accept it. I kept refusing after explaining the reason. Then he placed the money on the floor and asked me to accept it. I picked up the money, gave it back to him, and suggested he could use it to purchase snacks for his wife who is a diabetic.”
