Treemont is ever so fortunate to have Nancy Barclay as our Activity Assistant. Nancy came to work at this senior living in Houston community after volunteering occasionally while her mother-in-law Mae Barclay enjoyed living there. Her talents acknowledged, Activity Director Aimee Dubuisson jumped at the chance to ask Nancy to be her Assistant. Nancy is passionate about working with our residents. She is always busily engaged in various projects including: classes, holiday party planning, preparing for Treemont entertainers, planning events and speakers of interest to our residents — not to mention socials, bingo, movies, and more! Our director Aimee keeps the calendar filled with activities for all to enjoy!
Nancy has an elementary education degree from LSU. Her first job out of college was as an assistant buyer for a large women’s department store in New Orleans. She loved keeping up with fashion trends, calling vendors in New York to reorder, pulling clothes for their windows, and tracking sales for their stores. Later, in both New Orleans and Houston, Nancy taught pre-school which she said, “…was a pleasure as you watch little minds grow with enthusiasm.” On working with seniors, Nancy says,
“Working with seniors is so rewarding. They are very dear to spend time with. One can learn a lot from listening to stories of the adventures in their lives! They help me grow as a person by the wisdom they share. For example, I love this Creative Writing class I lead. We have talented, wise, and humorous writers. Their stories and thoughts continue to amaze me and broaden my thoughts and views on various topics. We laugh, we get choked up, and we just “fill up” with joy! It is a special treat for me to share that time with those residents”
Born and raised in New Orleans, Nancy experienced richness of art, music, architecture, antiques, and eclectic people. She met husband Bruce at LSU and later moved to Houston where he worked. They have been married for 30 years with a daughter who works at Texas Children’s Hospital as a metabolic dietician, and an absolutely adorable grand-daughter who calls them GiGi and Poppy.
Nancy says, “It is a pleasure and a treat to work with the residents at Treemont. They make my day! All of us here at this retirement community in Hosuton try to also make their day a little brighter.”
We are delighted to have Nancy Barclay on board to support Aimee and her Activity Department. Having first been a “family member,” Nancy’s insights and compassion are valued and appreciated. Nancy helps reinforce the benefits of socialization at assisted living in Houston communities.
