by Jane Zimmerman, Treemont Resident
There were many residents who came to Treemont due to Hurricane Harvey. When the City declared her neighborhood as a boat ramp for boats to rescue dogs and people, Arden Thornton had to leave. She came to Treemont before the storm ended and was taken in as a tenant, and provided the necessities she needed through an emergency donation program here in the activity department. She smiled when the volunteers outfitted her with new clothes, and said, “They all match!” Since then Arden has become a pleasant addition to our community. She decided to sell her home and make our senior living in Houston community her permanent residence, though she plans to travel to Europe extensively in the future.
Arden was born in Orlando, Florida. She attended Florida State University, majoring in French and Spanish, and minoring in music and education. She also lived in Tennessee and was amazed at a music teacher’s ability to teach children. Arden accompanied the children’s choir, and sang in the choir herself.
Arden’s husband of 22 years is deceased. She has 3 surviving children, 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Her son is an actor, and plans to become a writer and film producer. A grand son and great-grand son live in Sweden. Daphne Willis, her granddaughter, is a singer/songwriter. Her last hit was “Somebody’s Someone.” Daphne has worked in Nashville, London, New York and L.A. “All of my family are wonderful people!” said Arden.
Arden loves music and taking pictures, as well as learning new languages. She speaks English, French, Spanish, and is learning German. Her favorite singer is Helene Fischer, “because she sings with feeling,” in German, Russian and English. Helene reminds Arden of Doris Day – positive and uplifting. Arden also loves photographing nature. Genealogy will be her next personal study.
Enthusiastic Arden Thornton says she loves life because she does the things she loves most, however she is “face-blind;” she has a great memory and recognizes people by what they say, not by their appearance. She starts and ends her days listening to Helene Fischer and Andre Bocelli sing thanks and praise for another day. No wonder Arden’s life is so filled with joy! She is another “Treemont Keeper.”
