by Jane Zimmerman, Treemont Resident
With a melody in her voice and a merry smile and laugh, resident Kathy Samford has greeted those she does not know since she moved into the Treemont last December. Born in 1954 in Austin, Texas, Mary Katherine Samford moved to Houston in 1975 and has lived in the city since then.
Her sister Jodie Dornak (married to Steve Dornak) and Jodie's daughter Julianne are close to Kathy. (Julianne's sister Jennifer lives in Friendswood. Texas.) Kathy, Jodie, Julianne and husbands belong to Second Baptist Church on Woodway, and frequent services, Bible study, volunteering, pageants and other programs there. Last month Kathy sang a solo in the hymn, "Because He Lives" during a play at the church and received a standing ovation!
At home at the Treemont, Kathy enjoys many activities, like Zumba, Tai Chi, foreign language studies (she has already learned Spanish and French!), crafts of all types: jewelry making, decorations, holiday décor, cards; creative writing, color-me-calm, parties, socials, dances, music recitals, movies and socializing with friends. She also enjoys watching TV, such as Animal Planet (she loves cats, dogs and kittens), the travel channels, Hallmark movies, as well as "old" movies (she likes Frank Sinatra).
Kathy's hobbies are writing poetry, writing songs, and playing the piano/organ keyboard by ear.
Kathy's favorite subject is "Angels," who she loves and reveres. She is a firm believer of Guardian Angels, and wears angel jewelry, as well as a vast collection of crosses to signify her Christian faith. The crosses are also on her walls, both inside and out. A true believer, her favorite show is "Touched by an Angel."
Prior to living at the Treemont, Kathy lived at the Cullen Center, that is near Shepherd and River Oaks. Though she had friends there, she left because she liked the Treemont better, even if it meant down-sizing. She still is close to Jodie and Second Baptist Church, and of course, Julianne and her husband Kevin.
And Kathy is the model new resident here! She carefully studied all of the information the management gave her – especially a diagram of the complex building and marked the places to remember as well as her new friends' apartments, along with their names and phone numbers. When Comcast installed her cable, she got pen in hand and wrote down each channel and number, and later subscribed to TV Guide which she receives now. She also circled all of the activities she liked on the weekly and monthly activity calendars, and Jodie gave her a complete art set and jewelry making caddy for her coloring and crafts classes!
Not only does Kathy do many different things with so many interests, she is truly a sincere, polite, and friendly new resident – with a happy smile that can instantly warm the heart!
