Treemont has had so many talented newbies since Hurricane Harvey, and Carolyn Korkmas is no exception. Her specialty is writing, which she does with a flare, and includes research and colorful description to delight her readers. Perhaps this is why Carolyn chose it as a college major, as well as a career; but her love of writing began at the age of 10 when she had 100 pen pals!
Carolyn, a native Texan, was born in Greenville, TX., then later moved to Dallas and McKinney. She attended the University of North Texas and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science and English. Later she received her Master’s Degree in Library Science, specializing in law from the University of Denver. She then began her career in the law departments of oil companies, mainly Shell Oil, where she retired.
She met the love of her life, Larry Korkmas in I967 when he attended East Texas State University. They were married in 1968 and Larry had been drafted into the army after graduation in 1967. He had been trained in artillery and was originally sent to Viet Nam, but the army changed its mind just as Larry was waiting to board the bus for Viet Nam, and sent him to Germany instead. He and Carolyn were married in December 1968. Larry went to Germany in February and Carolyn followed after she graduated in May. Larry is in real estate – a broker, mediator and arbitrator and sells farms, ranches and forest lands. His hobbies are hunting, fishing and marksmanship.
Carolyn loves to read & write and belongs to the Special Libraries Association, Lakeside Women’s Club and DAR, which meets here at Treemont. She loves to travel, but says she has been everywhere she ever wanted to go! She and Larry lived in Denver for 10 years (1971-81) after his army days. Carolyn loves trains and when she was young had a pen pal living in Houston; she rode the train back and forth when they were 14. With all of her pen pals as a child, she spent little time playing outdoors until her mother put her out in the sunshine!
Carolyn’s advice to others: Treemont is a great place to live! She has already persuaded neighbors to move here and says she will stay if she can find a way to prepare at least meal per day on her special diet. Perhaps Larry will buy her a blender for their anniversary this year...uh-uh! This year will be their Golden Wedding Anniversary!
The Korkmas’ moved to Treemont in May after staying temporarily in a friends’ abode. Their home is in Lakeside Forest, Memorial and they plan to sell it after the repairs are finished. They do plan to be here at the Treemont at least 4 months. We hope Carolyn and Larry decide to stay here, and it they move, they come back to visit soon. Happy 50th Anniversary to the loving couple!
